Your Wedding Cake Style

Your wedding cake is often a central focus for guests as they enter your reception room thus making it a real talking piece.

If you are having trouble choosing which cake is best for you and best to suit your personal style, here are some different styles of wedding cake and the type of theme to which each is best suited.

The best place to start is with the traditional tiered cake. These are usually iced in white, ivory or cream regal icing and decorated in accordance with the overall theme. If you have a butterflies theme, your cake can be adorned in butterflies or if your theme is monochrome, why not have 2 black tiers and 1 white? Such cakes may be created in a square, round or heart shape and are generally stacked from largest on the base to smallest on the top. This type of wedding cake is usually found at a typical traditional wedding. This cake style gives you great flexibility on flavours; you can could choose a different flavour for each tier. Your cake maker will have lots of suggestions but the most common are vanilla sponge, lemon sponge, chocolate, coffee or rich fruit.

A modern twist on the classic tiered wedding cake is the combination of cupcakes and one tier. The top tier of the cake is generally a round shape and the following lower tiers will be made up of co-ordinating regal iced cup cakes. Such as design creates individual cakes for guests without losing the opportunity for the bride and groom to 'cut the cake.' This style of cake generally represents a modern bride who still wants a traditional themed wedding.

Next, there is the cupcake tower which is also a popular choice for anniversaries and birthdays as well as weddings. Although not always the case, brides opting for cute butter iced sponge cakes usually marry in the spring or summer months. As a result, icing is presented in pastel or vibrant shades to make a fresh, young and often effervescent centrepiece. These delicious cupcakes can also double up as your wedding favours; simply ask caterers to insert individual cakes into pre-prepared cupcake boxes for guests to take home as a 'thank-you.' Note though, that because these sponges are not fully iced, they cannot be made too much in advance.

Wedding costs these days are ever mounting and coupled to the recent recession, more and more couples are choosing wedding cakes as desserts. These might come in the form of a croc en bouche cake, a lavish cheesecake, a meringue tower or some other creation that your cake maker could produce. Desserts that can double up as a wedding cake are a great way to keep costs down without compromising on a having a cake or a pudding! The options for a 3 dimensional novelty cake are endless; cakes can be made in any shape to suit your theme or personality. Some couples have personally created toppers to look like themselves, others have cakes made to replicate their wedding venue whilst other couples prefer a cake shaped like a wedding bouquet.
